Borgeson Family Cabin
July 31, 2005This shot was taken the night of the last full moon about a week ago and was my first chance to experiment with the remote I just bought for my camera. Night photography is a bit of a challenge because it is difficult to see what you are shooting at when it is so dark. I think next time I might bring a flashlight.
The building is the Borgeson Family Cabin at the Linnaeus Arboretum at Gustavus Adolphus College, where I graduated from and currently work. I guess the thing was built by Swedish pioneers in 1866 and moved to campus in 1986. There is a cool garden next to the cabin that is filled with vegetables and other plants that were grown from the original seeds they brought with them in 1866.
I’m pretty happy with the quality of this shot, except for the grain in the sky. Maybe I’ll run this through Noise Ninja see if that will clear it up sometime…
Update: I ran it through Noise Ninja and it cleared things up a bit.
Update 2: I worked on it in Noise Ninja and filtered it for LOW noise like bob from No Traces recommended and that seemed to help some more. Thanks bob!

That’s a nice shot. I like how orange the cabin looks from the moon. Why are all the stars streaked? Was the shutter open long enough for them to move in the sky?

thanks. the moon was really really red when I took this shot because it had just come up over the horizon. a lot of the orange is actually from the lights from on campus over by the new residence hall.
yeah, the stars are all streaked because the shutter was open for about 2 minutes.

Hey, this is really a wonderful night shot. You must have done many tries before getting the right exposure length… Composition and colours are beautifyul

The lighting on the building is excellent and I like the beginnings of the star trail in the sky.

Great shot – love the light and sky…
— run it through noiseware — or ninja — but filter for LOW noise — or LOW color noise … that should help you a bit .. be sure to smart sharpen (or unsharp mask) afterwards… I like this shot… If you go back the next full moon, perhaps take a lower position closer to the cabin – and point your camera up towards the sky… You may find you’ll get a really dramatic shot using that technique…

Thanks for the nice comments everybody. RobW – i’m looking forward to seeing your similar shot. bob – thanks for the tips. i’ll play around with it in noise ninja some more. I’ve never used noiseware before, is it better? Also, I was going to take a closer shot like you suggested, but I really wanted to get that fence in there. I wish I had a wider lens so I could get more sky on this one.

Awesome picture! That is my family’s cabin. My great uncle Carl Borgeson was born in the cabin. Glad to see it’s still standing

My father-in-law, Frank H Borgeson was born in this cabin. My husband and I have some of furniture used in this cabin and the house that followed it. I tired to order a copy of the print from you but was unable to get the order “to take”. Can you help me?
