This is the north side of Wahlstrom Hall on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College. Wahlstrom is one of the residence halls that was built after or during World War II I think to house soldiers temporarily. Then, it was turned into dorms. The rooms are so small though, it’s crazy… Like 70 square feet I think. They actually used to have two people in each room, but for a while it has only been single rooms. They are planning on knocking it down next week or so because it’ll cost less to build a new one than to renovate this one… Asbestos and junk.

I stayed in this place one summer a few years ago and it totally sucked. I was on the sixth floor and I paid extra for an air conditioned section. Well, it got so hot in my room that my fan cord melted to my wall and the guy next to me smoked like a pack a day in his room, which is totally against being nice. I guess it would’ve been better if I was living with friends and stuff and we shared the common space a bit, but I was with people I didn’t like and it was hot. Hot hot.

I’ve heard that this used to be the cool dorm on campus, but that was years ago. Personally, I’m glad that it’s being knocked down. That place was kinda dirty.

As for this shot, I’m fairly happy with it, but it’s not quite what I was hoping for… I was trying to get a shot that captured the whole building and not just one wall… I have one sorta like that for tomorrow, but I don’t think it is as good.

  1. The building looks positively radiant against the evening sky. I’m guessing it’s not so pretty during the day? ;-)

  2. That’s a gorgeous shot. I can see how from another angle with different lighting it would look blighted, but with that sky it just captures the contrast of the building colors and the background perfectly.

  3. Thanks for the compliments, guys. You’re right, the building doesn’t look quite as nice as this picture captures, but in actuality it isn’t all that ugly from the outside. It’s made almost entirely from Kasota stone from the Kasota quarry just outside of St. Peter. Kasota stone has a unique tan color to it (that I don’t personally care too much for and it is all over campus in most of the buildings) but it looks pretty high quality. The inside definitely radiates that blighted look, though. Ugh.
