Just off of Highway 169 in Minnesota, right at the exit that takes you to New Prague or Gaylord, you can see this scene. If you are going north, it will be on your right. Most of the time it seems that whoever operates this farm has a bunch of hay lined up like this on a little hill in front of that single building. I think it’s a great scene, so I stopped one day and took some photos.

Unfortunately, the photos of this scene haven’t turned out how I would like. Therefore, I present you with this experiment in post-processing. I took a regular digital photo that I shot last February, and in Photoshop I tried to make it look like a photo taken with a Holga.

Last night I tried to go out and do some cool night shots out in rural Minnesota, but unfortunately shortly after I left my house it started to rain. I had hoped that I could wait it out, but after a while of sitting in my car I decided that it wasn’t going to happen so I went home and started digging through the archive.

  1. I really like this shot. I like how the centre is brighter than the rest. (How did you get this effect?) I also really like the simple composition. It works quite well.

  2. thats a nice one.. beautifully framed i should add.

  3. Thanks for the compliments.

Dan: the centre being brighter than the rest can be attributed to vignetting. However, the vignetting on this photo isn’t from a lens or anything like that, I did it digitally in Photoshop when converting it from raw. There is a little slider that is used for correcting vignetting, but you can use it backwards to add vignetting.

Alternatively, you could do it in Photoshop using an adjustment layer and a radial layer mask.
