foamy brew by Joe Lencioni

foamy-brew ƒ/5.6, 1/20 s, 100 ISO

This, along with the previous two abstract photos, was taken during my 60-minute beer brew boil the other day. This is the foam on the top of the wort and those little green clumps are probably chunks of malt and hops. The wort is sitting in my kitchen in a big bucket that I fondly call my primary fermenter. The yeast is hard at work, eating all of the sugar away and creating alcohol and CO2.

If you are a fellow homebrewer, you might be interested to know that the starting specific gravity of my Irish stout was about 1.070 which puts it at 9% potential alcohol. In laymans terms, that means it is thick and strong. I think it got that way because I boiled it at an exceptionally hot temperature. If this is too strong when I get to drink it then next time I will just have to go a little bit cooler on my boil… Or start with more water.

Also, Mozilla Firefox 1.5 came out yesterday. If you are a browser of the world wide web, you would be sorry if you missed out on this major update. It includes a bundle of revolutionary new features, such as native SVG support and ultra fast back-forward navigation. Download the latest version of Firefox right now. Do it. Everyone else is. You won’t be cool if you don’t. More peer pressure here.

If you are bored, check out the about page. I added some syndication of my last.fm songs, del.icio.us bookmarks, and metawishlist items.

  1. That’s a really interesting abstract. The vignetting was a good choice (whether from the lens or photoshoped, either way, it works).

  2. Thanks, Jarrett, for the kind comment. The vignetting and the square crop were done in photoshop. I’m glad you think that it works.
