An old ornament

While it is similar to yesterday’s shot of my stocking ornament, this one is closer to the shot I was actually going for. I do like it quite a bit, but I really wanted to showcase the decay in these ornaments.
You see, I got like four boxes of ornaments from my parents that were all covered with dust and the metallic colored foil is all cracked and peeling. I tried cleaning as much of the dust off as I could, but even more foil came off with each wipe. But, since I don’t have much of a selection of Christmas ornaments yet, I put up the dust-coated ornaments with all of their glorious missing foil.
Unfortunately, this shot doesn’t exactly showcase the decay. I think that it mostly has to do with the lighting. I think that that good photography roughly boils down to about 50% lighting, 30% composition, and 20% technical skill. So perhaps I will have another run at these Christmas bulbs after I get them off the dang tree.
A fun little bit of trivia: reflected in this particular shot is a giant 20″x30″ framed print of this photograph that’s hanging on my kitchen wall. And, speaking of prints, a quick poll: would you be interested in purchasing prints of my photographs? I am thinking about setting up a process to easily facilitate orders but might not want to bother if it wouldn’t be worth the time. Let me know your thoughts.
And, finally, nominations are open for the 2006 bloggies until Tuesday. That means you only have five days left until you can’t nominate anybody anymore. Be sure to get on over there to nominate your favorites because finalists are chose partially based on nominations received.

What this series shows is how superb lighting can turn ordinary objects into something much more.
