Me by Joe Lencioni

Joe Lencioni ƒ/9.0, 1/200 s, 100 ISO

Just a simple picture of myself. I haven’t really done a self portrait photograph before, so tell me what you think.

I’m pretty happy with it, especially considering that it was my first self portrait. It’s actually more difficult than I thought to get everything right without looking through the viewfinder. The couple of straggly hairs on the top is the only thing that bugs me about how this one turned out–I was thinking about taking them out in Photoshop but eventually decided against it.

I lit this shot with two strobes, one in front bounced in a silver umbrella and one behind as a hair light.

  1. i know what you’re talking about.. self portraits can be a pain in the ass. especially when you do the lighting with strobes (at least for me). but yours works great for me!
well lit, nice shadows (classical triangle shadow around the nose ;) ) and razor sharp. maybe, the eyes could be a bit brighter.
    nice one

  2. @martin Thanks! I agree about the eyes–I was considering lightening them a little in Photoshop.

Joe, I like it! Having your beard that way gives you an entirely different look than the “facial appearance” that I have known. It’s always interesting and fun to receive your Shifting Pixel emails; I really appreciate having the opportunity to “stay connected” with you in that manner. Love ya! Jeanell
