I’m excited to announce that I currently have an art show up at River Rock Coffee in Saint Peter, Minnesota. It features fourteen photographs from Shifting Pixel and runs from May 6 through a week or two into June.

I’ve had my work in art shows before but this is my first solo show, so it’s pretty cool to see my work publicly displayed. It gives me a good feeling of accomplishment. The feedback I’ve received so far has been positive, so it has been encouraging as well.

If you happen to be in town, make sure you cruise down to the River Rock and check it out. While you are there, be sure to get some coffee or a bite to eat–they make some delicious things.

Update (March 1, 2009): In case you missed it, I put together all of the work I had in the show right here. Enjoy.

It was quite a happy find for me because I have seen some really cool photos of cracked ground and was excited to be able to finally try my hand at it. I think this one turned out pretty well and nicely captures the peacefulness of the Kasota Prairie under the glowing white light of the full moon. I took a few other pictures here but they all more or less look the same, so I won’t bore you with them.

Unfortunately, due to the time-consuming nature of night shots (for this particular shot, the shutter was open for nearly six minutes!), this and The Lonely Tree are the only good ones I have from this round of night shooting. Hopefully it won’t be too cold here in Minnesota and I will be able to get out for the next full moon.

There is something that I find invigorating about taking night shots that’s difficult to put into words. I get out in nature, under the brightly-lit night sky, and everything just feels the way it’s supposed to. Things slow down, I get energized, and everything else fades away.

This was also actually the first time I went to the Kasota Prairie–one of my favorite spots for night shots–by myself. As it turns out, things get a little creepy out there without a partner…

If you like this, why not stick around?

I hadn’t been to a proper barber in about six or seven years, but I had heard good things from Jerry about this guy. It was quite a good experience and I’d recommend Nate’s Barber Shop in St. Peter to anybody. He seems to be a good guy and gives a good haircut. You can really tell that he cares about his work, which is a very good thing.

This is one of the few non-Granlund sculptures on campus.

As a tradition at Gustavus, this sculpture gets dressed up throughout the year. It’s kinda fun to see him wearing a lei and Hawaiian shirt, or a cap and gown.

Taking this photo as the sun was setting was rather fun. It was a tricky shot to expose correctly because the sky directly behind the sculpture was a very bright orange, while Gustav’s face was entirely in a shadow. I hadn’t tried my hand at HDR in a while, but as I looked at this sculpture, trying to decide how to frame it, I realized that it would be perfect to take it in HDR. So, what you see here was created from sixteen separate exposures of the same scene—none of which are as perfectly exposed as the result is.

The photo of the day today is for my friend, Rudi, who flew for the first time. Have fun in Nashville!
