It was quite a happy find for me because I have seen some really cool photos of cracked ground and was excited to be able to finally try my hand at it. I think this one turned out pretty well and nicely captures the peacefulness of the Kasota Prairie under the glowing white light of the full moon. I took a few other pictures here but they all more or less look the same, so I won’t bore you with them.

Unfortunately, due to the time-consuming nature of night shots (for this particular shot, the shutter was open for nearly six minutes!), this and The Lonely Tree are the only good ones I have from this round of night shooting. Hopefully it won’t be too cold here in Minnesota and I will be able to get out for the next full moon.

Actually, I got a case of the strep. For the most part it hasn’t really been all that bad. My appetite has been high because my body wants to make t-cells and anti-germs. But it feels like I swallowed a chunk of kryptonite… I have no energy and that sucks. I hope it will be gone in the morning.

New Vinyl

To cheer myself up, I just ordered some new records that I’m quite excited about. I’m not too familiar with all of the albums, but I am positive that I will love them all very much and am looking forward to adding them to my collection.

In case you were wondering, I did this mostly on purpose. You see, when I noticed that it had started to go bad, there were all these different very interesting colors that the mold was making in the tofu. So, I left it to see what would happen. I guess I’m weird.

I was thinking about posting another Holga shot from my tennis bubble session, but I felt like there were a lot of repeats, so I decided to switch it up. Perhaps I’ll scan some more film and rework it a bit to make it more interesting. In the meantime, you’ll have to endure this disgusting diptych.

In other news, I am sad to report that I will be scaling back quite a bit on my photoblog. I have recently realized that I spend more time at my computer than what is physically healthy, so I need to cut back some. Since I’m not planning on changing careers, it has to come out of my personal time at the computer. And, while it is hard for me to do so because I enjoy it so much, I think cutting back on my photoblog will result in a significant improvement in my physical health. So, with that said, you can expect to see sporadic posting that will hopefully be of higher than standard quality.

But, I think that this will come with some added bonuses. First, I will be able to spend more time focusing on actually taking pictures and not worrying so much about producing content every day for the web. I hope this will allow me to improve my skills. Additionally, I am hoping to focus more on improving the sore spots of my photography, especially the conceptual side of things. I’d like to put a lot more thought into my photography instead of always just going out to shoot something.

The photo a day thing was a lot of fun while it lasted. I think that I had a pretty good run at it and really enjoyed reading all of your comments. The comments are always the most encouraging part of all of this. So, keep checking back and we’ll get some new stuff posted up here soon enough. Who’s in a big rush, anyway?

I think that I would like to do some more shots like this: sparse and strictly black and white. I’d like to go out on a really foggy day and get some sweet shots of trees and buildings and such totally isolated from their backgrounds. I should be watching the weather report for foggy days.. We’ll see what happens.

I’m not sure if they represent anything in particular, but I definitely get the feeling that they do.

My birthday yesterday went quite well. I took the day off of work so it was quite relaxing. I ran a roll of film through my Holga and developed it but all except for one of the shots were dreadfully underexposed. I guess that’s just one of the hazards that come when using such an experimental camera. Then, after dinner and a couple of strawberry daiquiris, Sam and I went up to the college to take in some racquetball. Man, if you ever thought that you would be on the top of your game after having a drink, think again. The dynamics entirely change and your body just gets lazy. While it wasn’t a whole lot of a workout, it was still quite a fun time.

Yesterday Sam and I whipped up a batch of Nut Brown Ale. Hopefully it will turn out like one of my favorite beers, Newcastle. And, for those keeping track at home, the starting specific gravity was 1.045 if I remember correctly.

It’s actually pretty huge and I wonder how they get that cloth up there every year (I think that it shows up after Christmas and then comes down after Easter). The blue banners that you see on the left are leftover decorations from the annual Christmas in Christ Chapel (CinCC for short). I guess that this year some artist created those silk things that are the largest ever created in history or something like that. I don’t exactly recall. But, they make the chapel look pretty sweet and majestic.

I went back up to the chapel the other night to try and get some more decent photos because my first trip wasn’t too successful. My feeling during the shoot was kinda the opposite of the last time I was in the Chapel—while I was shooting I kept on thinking, “hey this is going to be awesome.” But, then when I got them onto my computer they didn’t come out as good as I had expected. But, I think that I have a few keepers in this bunch that I’ll be putting up here.

It’s my birthday tomorrow.

It’s hard to believe that I have posted 150 images to shifting pixel… That is quite the milestone and I am pretty proud of where things have gone for my photoblog. I appreciate everyone’s comments so much—it’s really the only thing that keeps me putting up new images every day. I am really looking forward to where the next 150 images will take things.

For this, my 150th image, I put together a mashup of some of my favorites. I have always been really bad with favorites, so it was really hard to pick the four that I wanted to feature here (for additional favorites, you should check out the portfolio category). This mashup is kinda like when television shows do a clips episode.

The images (starting top-left and going clockwise):

lights 1

basement 1

the night after the first snowfall

Air conditioner unit

Also, I have been thinking about the 2006 Bloggies lately and I relized that the Bloggies are exactly what led me into reading many great photoblogs out there and first got me interested in blogging. They perform a wonderful service to the blogging community that I am very thankful for. Nominations are open until the 10th and there are a bunch of categories, so make sure to nominate all of your favorite blogs. I won’t complain if you want to nominate shifting pixel in the category of “Best Photography of a Weblog” category or any others (incidentally, if you do want to nominate me, just put “shifting pixel” in the nominee box and “http://shiftingpixel.com” in the URL box).
